Create your world from the beginning

During one of the ‘Cinema Lessons’ we could hear the confessions of Bruno Baretto. Here’s what he said:

It’s a little bit like in a church… Becoming a director is in a way like becoming a priest because both professions can be defined with one word- devotion.Have you ever noticed that during the Oscar ceremony all filmmakers devote most of their speaking time to express thanks to their families? There’s one good reason for doing it- guilt. Because when you are in the film industry, you put your job above everything else, your family goes second. Creating a film is always difficult, no matter if you do it in Hollywood or anywhere else. The reasons may be different but still it’s very hard. Without family and their support, without the emotional security it gives, no director would have courage to take up the challenge and create a film… I know for sure that I wouldn’t have the strength to do it without my family.
The reason why I make films is because my childhood wasn't happy and I needed to do something that would make my world better. The cinema is a perfect way to create a new world and doing it is like heroine to me … Maybe that’s why I have been going to a psychoanalyst all my life.
Of course that’s not everything. Making a film gives you a lot of satisfaction, you can meet many interesting people. Being a director is like creating best conditions for them to spread their wings and fly. I’m just a conductor whose job is to make sure everyone is flying in the same direction. By saying ‘everyone’ I mean all my associates: operators, costume designers, editors, script writers… I would never succeed in doing a film without them. Maybe that’s why the cinema is called the seventh art- it joins music, literature, paintings. The cinema creates one world
For me people are the main motivation to start making a movie. Their behavior and cultural background appear in all my films. Of all people women are the most inspiring because of being more complex… Simply better that men. Of course men are very important, because women would not survive without us, but frankly speaking I do believe that they are ahead of us- more sincere and mysterious at the same time… I’m not saying that because I’m a romantic man, but because their inner world is simply richer and that’s the reason why in most of my films you will find women in leading roles. ‘Last Stop 174’ is not a film about a boy, but about a woman who takes him into her house. Women often give me the concept for a film, they are the reason why I want to tell the story.
Telling a story is the nature of the cinema. When we were children we often asked our parents to tell us a story, a fairytale. When we grow up, we stop doing it. Instead we go to the cinema or rent a film and allow ourselves to be children for a while. I think it’s a natural need that a man has all his life, a need to listen to stories. Thanks to that we can leave the dull routine of everyday life behind us and commune with something extraordinary. I want to give people movies that make them happier- and my job is to live up to that devotion
