Classic and legendary film of the cinema of moral anxiety period. Poland, mid-70s. Agnieszka is 25 years old and had recently graduated from the film school. She wants to make a documentary on Mateusz Birkut, labour champion from the fifties, and tries to convince to this idea a TV editor. He unwillingly agrees to girl’s proposition and gives her tape and film equipment. He expects her to make short, nostalgic piece on a proletariat hero from the past. However, Agnieszka begins her private investigation on Birkut. From archive footage and talks with his former friends surprising picture of past era emerges.

Viewers correctly read dramatic vicissitudes of Mateusz Birkut as a metaphor of man’s struggle against totalitarianism.
