Bossa Nova at TWO RIVERSIDES! We invite you to come to the third edition of Film and Art Festival TWO RIVERSIDES in Kazimierz Dolny and Janowiec by the Vistula River, August 1st – 9th, 2009. The opening concert will be held in Kazimierz Dolny castle on August 1st, 2009 at 9.00 p.m. This year the Honorary Patron is the Ambassador of Brazil in Poland. For the opening of the festival, we have prepared a special concert of original bossa nova music performed by artists from Brazil. For the first time in Poland we will have a great occasion to hear the artists that are the creators of bossa nova in Brazil. Francis Hime (a composer, pianist, vocalist and author of film music) with Olivia Hime (vocalist) and their band of 5 will be one of the greatest stars of this concert. The band members are:

GABRIEL IMPROTA, guitars;
ANDRÉ SANTOS, contrabass;
DIEGO ZANGADO, percussion;
DIRCEU LEITE, saxophone, clarinet, woodwind instruments.

Francis Hime is the representative of classic bossa nova composers from Brazil and of the generation of artists who combined afro-Latino rhythms with sophisticated jazz. His great compositions were performed by such artists as Chico Buarque, Gilberto Gil, Maria Bethania, Gal Costa, Milton Nascimento, Toquinho, Olivia Hime and Gaetano Veloso. For years he worked with the greatest Brazilian song writer, Vinicius de Moraes. On the basis of his play Marcel Camus created his „BLACK ORPHEUS” (Golden Palm in Cannes, 1969, Oscar, 1970), which will be screened at our Festival in ‘Music My Love’ section. He also composes music for films, including those created by Bruno Barreto, one of the most interesting Brazilian filmmakers. The music and songs written for Barreto’s “Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands” were awarded many times and deeply rooted in the canon of film music. You will have an opportunity to hear those compositions in their original versions while the opening concert on Saturday, August 1, and then on Sunday you will watch ‘Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands’ in the presence of Francis Hime and Bruno Barreto. The latter will also be our special guest at TWO RIVERSIDES festival. There will be a lot more Latin and jazz music in the films presented at the Festival. In the Documentary section, we’ll present “Maria Bethania – a Pebble form Aruanda’. It’s a beautiful, private documentary film in which we meet Maria Bethania, one of the most famous Brazilian vocalists, with her mother and brother, Caetano Veloso (!!!) and her favourite guitarist, in a town in Bahia State celebrating Maria’s birthday. In this small town their careers started. Caetano plays with the guitarist on his own guitar, they all talk, laugh, reminisce about the old times and …. sing. Only for themselves, and for us. In another documentary, “The House of Tom” we’ll visit Antonio Carlos Jobim’s house. Our guides there will be Ana Jobim, the widow of this magnificent (C)reator of bossa nova music, and Kati de Almeida Braga, the film producer. ENJOY IT!

The concert is divided into four parts: In the first one, Francis Hime appears as a magnificent composer whose greatest hits were created in collaboration with famous Brazilian poets, e.g. Vinicius de Moraes, Chico Buarque, Gilberto Gil, Geraldo Carneiro, and Olivia Hime. Many of his songs have also been recorded by Brazilian singers, such as Elis Regina, Gal Costa, Caetano Veloso, Milton Nascimento, Maria Bethânia and Joyce, and by international artists as well, e.g. Bill Evans, Tony Bennet, Kenny Burrel.

The second part, in which Olivia participates, reminds us of the classical bossa-nova, usually included in their repertoire. We can hear songs composed by Tom Jobim, Baden Powell, Vinicius de Moraes, Carlos Lyra, and Francis himself.

As to the third part, it is dedicated to songs from Brazilian movies that became hits, starting with Mulher Rendeira, the main theme from the movie ‘O Cangaceiro’, which was awarded the Golden Palm at the Cannes Festival, and proceeding with songs written by Tom Jobim and Luiz Bonfá in collaboration with Vinicius de Moraes and Antônio Maria (Manhã de Carnaval), composed for the film ‘Orfeu Negro’. It also includes movies themes, written by Francis, that received awards, such as: Dona Flor a Seus Dois Maridos (the director of this movie, Bruno Barreto, will be our guest at the festival), Lição de Amor, and A Noiva da Cidade. Additionally, Francis and his musicians will play instrumental versions of some movie themes.

At the end of the concert, Francis, Olivia, and their excellent musicians will assemble once more to remind us a few sambas and songs that, according to them, represent a small but very important sample of Brazilian music.

Francis and Olivia Hime with their band ,will give a concert during the Opening Ceremony of the Festval. The members of their band are: Dirceu Leite (wind instruments), Gabriel Improta (guitar and electric guitar), Diego Zangado (drums and percussion), André Santos (double bass), and Francis himself (vocal and piano). The latter is in charge of the arrangements and musical management. Olivia is responsible for the set list.

The show was prepared in connection with the 50th anniversary of the origin of bossa-nova (celebrated in 2008). Francis and Olivia along with Milton Nascimento, Chico Buarque, Maria Bethânia, Edu Lobo, Joyce, Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, belong to the 2nd generation of the bossa nova artists.

OLIVIA HIME (1943), a Brazilian singer and author of lyrics. She is the co-owner and manager of ‘Biscoito Fino’ publishing company. In 2005 the song ‘Cancao Transparente’ (composed by her and her husband) was nominated to the Latin Grammy Award for the Best Brazilian Song.

FRANCIS HIME (1939), an excellent Brazilian composer popular since 1960s. He received basic music education, composes symphonies and chamber music. He is a pianist and singer.

Karbido is known for combining different types of music and for viciousness that allows them to make use of anything like birds’ fluttering wings. Preparing this event they conducted a series of outdoor sessions and came up with a 12-pieces concert based on electronic and psychoacoustic experiments. The musicians often draw on post rock, noise, minimal and ambient, their music echoes the old barrel-organs, merry-go-rounds, gramophones combined with clamouring guitar riffs and a distortion of rhythm. ‘CINNAMON’ is full of variety of sounds, new arrangements and richness of aims. Jurij Andrychowicz, a charismatic musician, uses his voice to transform poetry into hypnotic stories of strange occupants living in ruined tenement houses, of dark blind alleys and finally of the bulldozer of time and history razing the whole world to the ground. The master feature of this auto-interpretation is its bilingualism. It doesn’t matter if they perform in Polish or Ukrainian, they always rivet the audience’s attention. Jacek Podsiadło contributed to it with his perfect translations.
