Brunon Schultz Festival Association is the Polish co-organizer of the International Brunon Schultz Festival that takes place every 2 years (since 2004) in Drohobycz, Ukraine. The village is the artist’s hometown. He is still underestimated there, the bookstores don’t sell his books. That’s why the Association tries to restore him ‘his beloved land, this uncanny province, this unique town’ by supporting Ukrainian artistic society from the Polish Science Information Centre of the local university. Creativeness, life and perception of Brunon Schultz’s work is a metaphor, a symbol of the 20th century melting pot.

Festivals in Drohobycz draw a variety of people, professors and translators from all over the world; they learn about Schultz from vernissages, performances, concerts and films. Wojciech Hass’ ‘Hour-Glass Sanatorium’, Brothers Quay films (guests of the festival with their ‘Street of Crocodiles’) and Wojtek Grabowski’s short films were presented during the festival. Alfred Schreyer, the last of Schultz’s disciples, and Daniel Galay, an Israeli composer, gave their concerts; we could see performances prepared by Leszek Mądzik’s Visual Stage of the Catholic University of Lublin, Lublin Dance Theatre, Białystok Puppet Theatre, Marczewski’s Studio Test Theatre and Kurbas’ Theatre; we could participate in literary meetings- e.g. Bohdan Zadura and Jurij Andruchowycz (together with the Karbido Crew).

During the festival in Kazimierz, the Association will present artistic projects devoted to the promotion of Schultz’s works, to discovering the magic of Drohobycz and the peculiar character of Borderland culture.

‘ela,ela’ is an innovative name of a group of artists who met at the Cyprus College of Art. They come from different countries and are presenting their newest works in Kazimierz.

The Cyprus College of Art is an institution with a long tradition. It was established by Stass Paraskos in 1969. His life and work was closely connected with Cyprus, his native country, but his paintings won international recognition.

Professional artists from all over the world joined efforts to work together as a group in a studio challenging their own creativeness and others' experiences. The artists’ unadulterated creation and life contributed to the formation of this project which occurred to be a priceless source of new ideas, experiments and fun. Despite the fact that they were united by a common theme (nature, culture, history and social structure of Cyprus), they have completely different historical backgrounds and experiences.

Jacek Sempoliński was born in 1927 in Warsaw. During the war he learned painting in a conspiracy school, in the years 1946-1951 he studied at the faculty of painting, and in the years 1951-1955 at the faculty of scenography at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. After he finished studies, he devoted himself to painting, scenography and wall painting (e.g. he designed the polychromies at tenement houses in Warsaw Old and New Town). In 1955 he took part in the All-Poland Exhibition of Young Art in Warsaw Arsenal where he was awarded for his works. Since 1956 he’s been working at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw..

His works were shown many times during collective and individual exhibitions (e.g. the first one in 1960 at the Zachęta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw, in 2002 at the National Museum in Poznań). His works were exhibited at expositions entitled ‘21st Century Painting’ and ‘the Invasion of Sound’ at Zachęta Gallery. Sempoliński received many awards, e.g. the Jan Cybis Award in 1977, St. Brother Albert Award, academy award from the Dean of AFA in Warsaw and Ministry of Culture and Arts award. He devotes his time to theory and criticism of art. He lives and works in Warsaw.

Born in1959 in Lublin, Poland. In the years 1979 - 1983 he studied at the Institute for Art Education at the Maria Skłodowska-Curie University (UMCS) in Lublin, in prof. M. Herman atelier. In 2005 he obtained assistant professor degree at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. He works at the Institution of Painting and Drawing II on the Faculty of Fine Arts UMCS in Lublin. Currently he is an associate dean for students affairs and a member of The Union of Polish Artists. In his artistic work he focuses on painting and drawing. He participated in 25 individual exhibitions and many group exhibitions in Poland and abroad.

An act of creation is nothing else than artist’s manifestation, his attitude toward the world and life. When I paint, I try to grant new meaning to phenomena and ideas, uncover their deeper, metaphysical meaning. The world of my paintings exists in parallel to the world that surrounds us. Paintings become beings on their own, evidences, that there are forms alienated from the material world, which create new categories for understanding of the nature. Titles are only auto commentaries, they don’t explain, they don’t suggest any solutions, they only provoke individual and arbitrary, often abstract associations, so that the viewer could feel, that he is co-creator of the announcement that I send.

Colored patches in my paintings become separate beings reflecting everything that cannot be named, explained, measured or weigh. The single motion of painter’s brush or putty, or pouring the paint on the canvas makes the composition, in which the main role is played by mutual relations of colour, shades, brightness and structure. A painting is the elaboration of a thought, keeping of a moment, a page from a diary on which I immortalize events, people, places, time and memories, to save them from oblivion.

Art makes our lives richer, teaches us humility, tolerance, gives us freedom, independence and the possibility to communicate with others. It forces us to search for and think about the meaning and goals of life. It is the sign of humanism in its existential dimension. For me, the act of painting is an attempt to find a place of mine and to save my dignity.

Mariusz Drzewiński

Mariusz Drzewiński calls his paintings an autobiographical commentary, because they always refer to some real situations or mental experiences that inspired him, that could not be explained or verbalized in a different way. Initially the process of creating art is improvisational, intuitive. The artist creates in the world of nature and culture, and hence his paintings illustrate the observations he’s made, the experiences and emotions he possesses, all of them being not only elements of private autobiography but also forms of discovering and experiencing this world. Forms expressed with a language of painting reality, synthesized and creating new meanings, symbols, contexts and associations. Forms that still preserve their genetic ties with the world of nature and culture, enriching the picture of all that exists.

The argumentation outlined here is the evidence of Drzewiński’s creative self-awareness, of his style's evolution that leads from affirmation to the play of synthesis and analysis. But that is not everything. In those seemingly still compositions we can spot the author’s energy, for whom creating art is something that has been encoded in his genes, an inner instinct or compulsion that pushes him to paints and brushes.

Who or what leads him to painting? The painting itself! His works are only his autobiography, an outer record of his creative powers grounded in the nature of the world.

We are presenting Kobyliński's pictures of native Męćmierzans and newcomers who have already taken ‘roots’ in this place or are planning to settle here.

42 large-format photographs are exhibited in the square in the centre of Męćmierz. Thanks to the owner of this site, we could adopt the place to be the open air festival gallery.

Janusz Kobyliński

An artist photographer, a member of Association of Polish Art Photographers since 1982. In the years 1976-79 he worked as an independent photographer for ITD, PERSPECTIVES and RAZEM magazines. In the 1980’s he cooperated with MAGNUM agency and PARIS MATCH magazine. Until 2002 he dealt with advertising photography. In the second half of the 1990’s he was the president of ZG and of Warsaw branch of APAP. The co-author and co-editor of ‘WHITE-RED. The Book of Polish Ads Creators’ and www.bialoczerwona.pl vortal; the co-author of Royal Baths Park Agreement, co-founder and member of Association of Polish Authors and Editors POLISH BOOK. In 2006 he founded the first on-line Photography School in Poland www.eszkolafotografii.pl. He works in the documentary and reportage studio of the Academy of Arts and Design in Łódź.

APAP Honorary Diploma for ‘ZAWAŁ’ reportage awarded at the Press Photo Competition, 1977. Dozens of individual and collective exhibitions, e.g. World Photo Exhibition organized by the World Council of Professional Photographers and Kodak at the 150th anniversary of photography, which was exhibited in over 100 countries /3 photographs from Poland/. Michał Borys

Michał Borys was born and has lived in Warsaw. He studied at Warsaw ASP Painting Department. In 1995 he was graduated with distinction in studio of Professor Zbigniew Gostomski. Since 1995 he has been connected with his mother faculty, where he currently works as PhD.

He pursues easel painting and drawing, devoting his time to the world of still life, in which he conducts his pictorial searching for beauty captured in simple items, and the external world, which leads through narrow passages, lanes and staircases into well known and undiscovered places as well.

The exhibition „In the space of twilight” is the first attempt of comprehensive presentation of the author’s other side of personality, the one leading towards external borders. It is a collection of works, that have been shaped within the years, uncovering casual places , fortuitous sometimes; yet, memorable enough to recollect them in drawings and to reveal them once more, crossing the boundary of personal purposes. However, these industrial landscapes and parts of interiors are only pretence, a stage for a game of lights and darkness.
