„The Visit Of The Old Lady” (1956) is an superbly constructed drama with some black humor in it. In an exceptionally clearcutness and accuracy it accuses human nature, full of viciousness, hypocrisy and greed. Waldemar Krzystek’s play was realized in the natural landscapes and interiors. By their appearance we can assume that the action takes place somewhere in the present-day Poland. Thanks to this trick, Durrenmatt’s drama seems to be curiously fresh and familiar. In the little town, situated somewhere in the remote country side, unemployment rate rises, production and trade slow down and people live in an extreme poverty. Authorities hope for the improvement of the situation thanks to Klara Zachanassian’s visit. This is where this extravagant multimillionaire spend her youth. Lately she publicly declared that she wanted to visit her place of origin.
